An 8 day tour of the Negev and Judean deserts, with a quick peek of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv
The quintessential desert experience touches the very heart of the human spirit. The serene, spacious expanses make us aware that we are but a mere speck on the vast landscape that lies before us. Bike riding through the desert connects us to this dramatic natural setting and we become an integral part of this magical world. This tour will give you a taste of a variety of Negev landscapes – the mountains, canyons and riverbeds, desert springs, Machtesh Ramon crater and other hidden desert beauties. We will meet the people who inhabit the region – members of kibbutz Sde Boker, Bedouin nomads, and residents of the development town of Mitzpe Ramon. We will also discover the desert’s natural wildlife – antelope, gazelle, rock hyrax – and many other plants and animals. A day in Jerusalem will let us rest our legs and visit site of the new and old city. The trip will end in Tel Aviv, the center of urban bustle and western civilization.
Day 1: Arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport
From the airport, drive south to the Negev desert to the town of Mitzpe Ramon, located near the edge of the great natural Ramon crater. Spend the night in Mitzpe Ramon.
Day 2: Riding Ramon crater
Desert views brimming with magic and serenity, fascinating geological forms, desert springs. Ride a segment of the Nabatean Incense Road and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Nabatean preservation station. In the afternoon, take a bus ride to visit the ancient Nabatean trading city of Avdat and Kibbutz Sde Boker, the home of Israel’s visionary founding prime minister, David Ben Gurion. Spend the night in Mitzpe Ramon.
Day 3: Desert Oasis
Discover and experience first-hand a desert oasis. Set out from the Ben Gurion Desert Research Institute and ride to the depths of the Nahal Tzin stream. Continue on to Nachal Akev to discover the spectacular meeting of the arid desert with the life-giving waters of Ein Akev spring. Swim in the fresh pool created by the spring and then ride on to Nachal Tzin and Ein Avdat. In the evening enjoy traditional Bedouin hospitality in an authentic nomad tent. Spend the night in Mitzpe Ramon.
Day 4: Judean Desert, Dead Sea & Jerusalem
Start the day by driving to the Dead Sea. From there, ride the ridge of Nachal Partzim and enjoy expansive desert views as far as the Flour cave and Amiaz plain. A short walk brings us to the Mt. Sodom vista point for a spectacular view of the Dead Sea. After bathing in the mineral rich waters of the Dead Sea, drive to Jerusalem where we will enjoy and evening out in Jerusalem and then spend the night at a picturesque hotel located in the old city.
Day 5: Jerusalem
Start the day with a comprehensive tour of the Old City on foot. Wander through the ancient stone alleyways, walk the historic steps of the Via Dolorosa, and visit several of its famous churches. Finish up the walking tour by visiting the Western Wall and the Jewish Quarter and the Arab street bazaar. In the afternoon we shall tour the modern west city and return to Mitzpe Ramon for the night.
Day 6: Deep in the Heart of the Desert
Experience the intense beauty of the Negev desert as you ride from the highest heights to the bottom of the deep Ramon crater. Enjoy some of the most untouched and isolated desert landscapes - Nachal Tzin, Nachal Hava, Ma’ale Noah, Ramon crater. Say farewell to the Negev with a festive feast in the heart of the Crater. Spend the night in Mitzpe Ramon.
Day 7: Desert Wilderness to Big City Lights
Drive to Tel Afeq (Antipatris Fort), the place of the biblical city of Afeq and the Herodian fort of Antipatris. From there we will ride alongside the Yarkon River and discover the delights of modern Tel Aviv’s urban Yarkon park and beach boardwalk. In the evening, enjoy a taste of Tel Aviv nightlife. Spend the night in Tel Aviv.
Day 8: Shuttle to Ben Gurion Airport & Flight Home
